eSIM for Turkey: mobile data for Istanbul, Antalya and beyond
How to stay online in Turkey with a travel eSIM — coverage, how much data to take, why a foreign phone and a Turkish SIM don't mix, and how to set it up before you fly.
In short
- A travel eSIM for Turkey connects to the main Turkish networks, with 4G and 5G in the cities.
- It is installed at home and works the moment you land — no shop, no passport at the airport.
- A Turkish SIM card in a phone bought abroad works only for a limited time unless the phone is registered; a travel eSIM avoids that.
- For a week of maps, messages and photos, 3–5 GB is enough for most travellers.
Contents
Turkey is one of the most visited countries in the world — Istanbul for a long weekend, Antalya and the Aegean coast for the beach, Cappadocia for the balloons. Wherever you go, you will want maps, a taxi app, translations and messages from the first minute. A travel eSIM gives you all of it without hunting for a SIM card at the airport.
Coverage and speed
A travel eSIM for Turkey uses the main Turkish mobile networks. In Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and the resort towns you can expect fast 4G and, in many areas, 5G. Coverage is good along the main roads and the coast; in the mountains and remote villages the signal can drop, as with any operator.
The networks each package uses and their speed are listed on the Turkey page, next to the packages.
Why not just buy a Turkish SIM card?
You can — but there are two catches.
- Time and paperwork. A local SIM is bought in an operator's shop with your passport, often in a queue, and airport kiosks usually charge more.
- Phone registration. Turkey registers phones by their IMEI. A phone brought from abroad works with a Turkish SIM card only for a limited period; after that, it must be registered for a fee, or the line stops working on it.
A travel eSIM is not a Turkish line, so none of this applies: you install it at home and use it for as long as your package lasts.
How much data do you need?
| Trip | Typical use | Package |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend in Istanbul | Maps, messages, a few photos | 1–3 GB |
| A week at the beach | Plus social media and some video | 3–5 GB |
| Two weeks, lots of sharing | Video calls, stories, streaming | 10 GB or more |
| Working remotely from there | Hotspot for a laptop, calls | 20 GB or more |

Setting it up
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to one operator.
- Buy a package on the Turkey page. The QR code comes to your email and your account.
- Install it at home over Wi-Fi — it takes a few minutes. The install guide shows each step for iPhone and Android.
- When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and choose it for mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your own line.
Questions and answers
Does the eSIM give me a Turkish phone number?
No. Travel eSIMs are data only. Your own number stays on your own SIM, and you can call and message through apps over the eSIM's data.
Can I use one eSIM for Turkey and other countries on the same trip?
Yes, with a regional package. If your trip continues to Europe or the Balkans, look at the regional plans on the packages page.
When does the package start counting days?
When the eSIM first connects to a network in Turkey, not when you buy or install it — so you can set it up days before the trip.
